I wouldn’t go as far as saying greatest powerviolence band of all time, but yes, I am calling Obacha the greatest fucking fastcore band of all time. Stumbling from the ashes of War Hero, 4 kids from Squamish switched instruments and started the first incarnation of Obacha. Side A of the LP compiles all the 4 piece material, it is ultra raging, high energy, punk as fuck fastcore/pv, absolutely unrivaled in being the most fun to mosh to. This material sounds like the whole west coast wrapped up in one brazenly cheeky package, from the California innovators Lack of Interest, Spazz, and No Comment (“Dude, No Comment!” “Yeah!” “FUCK Yeah!”), to more local influences like Chuck Norris and Osk. The energy in these recordings is so tangible, even without reading the lyrics, you can feel their youthful anger and passion for fast punk. The slow and midpaced parts really shine on this material and at least one of them WILL stay stuck in your head long after the LP is off the turntable. On that note;

“I hate slow music”

“Fuck stoner rock”

“Playing fast is nice”

Side B marks the start of the 3 piece Obacha lineup, after parting ways with their original drummer Evan, their vocalist Graham moved to drums, while continuing to also do vocals. Obacha now consisted of the unholy trinity of Squamish, Graham Green, Collin Lamb, and Tommy Wilson, and things were about to get a lot faster. No longer awesome fast hardcore, Obacha had gone full on batshit insane fastcore mode. Taking full advantage of their new super fast drummer, both their BPMs and songwriting leveled up big time, think the constant change, one-part-per-second style of Sidetracked or xBrainiax pushed even further and played precise as fuck, recorded raw as fuck. This side also features my favorite Obacha song “Smoke Weed Play Fast”, which is obviously a hyperblasting stoner rock diss track. This sound would prove to be incredibly influential, from a ton of Obacha worship bands popping up in subsequent years (especially in Southern California) to my own band admittedly sounding a lot more like Obacha after we toured with them and Shooting Spree. Between these recordings, the minds they blew at shows locally and on tour, and the legendary Fastcore Fest (which was thrown by Tommy with “help” from his bandmates), Obacha had forever changed fastcore for the better. Their passion for playing real fast and writing insane songs inspired the hell out of me, and I hope this record can do the same for others.

R.I.P. TO THE KING OF PLAYING FAST, GRAHAM GREEN.
